Processing foreign-accented speech: social and cognitive impact
Objectives:
A foreign accent immediately reveals the speaker’s identity, which can affect the way the information coming from this speaker is processed. Using electroencephalography, the project will examine how individual factors (e.g., speaker’s accent strength, stereotypes associated to nationalities, native listeners’ cognitive flexibility) affect the way the brain processes foreign-accented speech and the consequences this may have on social interaction and cognitive processes (e.g., decision making).
Expected Results:
(i) to better understand the impact a foreign accent has on native speakers’ cognition and behaviour; (ii) to demonstrate the necessity to implement strategies to avoid social discrimination (e.g., job interview) and facilitate social inclusion in multilingual societies.
